Tried adminstering a Curipod interactive presentation in a staff development workshop

Microsoft + Copilot still the best option for generating a presentation from a bulleted list

Recently, I tried several apps for converting a bulleted-list outline into a slidedeck (Gamma; Edcafe; Prezi; Desktopus; Chalkie .....) but most of them displayed these two problems: (1) they added in extra content despite my instruction not to, and (2) the generated visuals that accompanied the slides were irrelevant.

So far, the most satisfactory workaround is still Microsoft Powerpoint + Copilot. It most faithfully follows my uploaded outline text. It doesn't generate irrelevant visuals, and instead presents some of the ideas in my bulleted-list outline in graphic formats.

Edcafe ai: generating a slidedeck from a Youtube video for a Previewing step

Sometimes, a Youtube video which is very rich in content may not be easy for students to follow if they are asked to watch it individually or together as a whole class. Although today there are AI apps which will generate a transcript/summary forr a YT video, the transcript/summary is still one piece of text, which may not be very captivating.

One pre-viewing idea I have tried out recently in my Language Awareness course is to generate a concise slidedeck from a Youtube video I was about to ask the class to view. I asked the class to look through the generated slidedeck first. Many of the slides summarised the video content in graphic forms for easier understanding. When the students had finished looking through the generated slidedeck (for 3 minutes), they then watched the video. The post-viewing quiz showed a very high level of understanding.

For illustration, here is a pre-video-viewing slidedeck I created using Edcafe AI. The YT video was created by Mr Ha Chi Hong, in which he explained how to use Gemini Spark to convert PDFs to editable documents. The content of the video is rather technical.  Looking through the Edcafe AI-created slidedeck as a pre-viewing step will certainly help.

Tried using Powerpoint Copilot to generate a presentation based on a Youtube video

Created a PPT slidedeck using built-in Copilot: Good Results

 My Workflow:

1. I prepared a point-form summary of What is Metacognition in WORD.

2. I opened PPT, and chose 'Create with Copilot.' A side pane appeared on the right.

3. I uploaded the above WORD, asked Copilot to turn it into a PPT, sticking to the content of the WORD WITHOUT adding in more content ideas.

4. After answering a couple of parameter questions (eg, style), it started to generate the slidedeck.

THE OUTPUT:

TAKEAWAYS

1. Output better than other apps like Gamma and SlideAI. It doesn't add in additional content ideas.

2. The points are presented in graphic forms in many of the slides.

3. The initial output lends itself to revision. (For example, I asked it to enlarge the font size a little.)

4. The biggest problem: The long time it takes.

Tried out PPT slides.ai add-on: Still not meeting my needs

 Tried out the add-on.

1. There are 4 ways to start. The script method, which makes use of only the script uploaded, is a paid feature.

2. For the free plan, you can start with a topic. You can also paste in a text, but it may generate new contents.

3. I used the result of a Gemini chat on SRL; pasted it into the prompt box, which has word limit.

OUTPUT

- very texty

- minimal visuals included

- suitable for reading, but not for presenting a lecture from.

==========================================================

The built-in Copilot function is free. It can stick to your input text. It generates some visuals, which are usually graphics, that relate to the content of the slides. The biggest minus is its very slow speed.

Using Copilot in PPT to generate a slidedeck from a bulleted-list outline

How to retain the indentation when pasting a copied Workflowy list into another application

A Workflowy list will usually have bullet point at varying levels (level 1; level 2  ....). Very often, when copied and pasted into another app, the bullets and the indentation will disappear, so that there will be no difference between the levels. As a result, the levels will not work.

To work around this problem:

1. Do not copy from Workflowy, Instead, click on the 3 dots next to the parent bullet, and choose Export.

2. Choose MARKDOWN.

3. The whole list will now show ordinary word processing format, with all bullets (Level 1; Level 2 ...) beginning with a hypen, and each level 2 INDENTED.

4. Then, copy this formatted list, and paste it into the target app (e.g., Padlet; Gemini)

Turning a Workflowy bulleted list into a Padlet board for realtime presentation

Created a Padlet board for realtime presentation by pasting in a bulleted list created in Workflowy.

The Steps:

https://workflowy.com/s/how-to-turn-a-workfl/W9UnQGs6E8KsAcK4

=========================

PLUSES OF PADLET PRESENTATIONS:

1. Easy to create a bulleted list in Workflowy.

2. The above procedure is quite simple.

3. Padlet is good at embedding Youtube videos, and websites.

4. Hence, while presenting, all you need to do is to start with just the padlet. Each time you get to an external website, just click on that board.

Uploading a PPT to Wayground and having the links still clickable: Steps

 1. Prepare PPT; insert links in slides as usual.

2. Upload to Google Drive as a Google Slidedeck. JUST UPLOADING THE PPT won't work for the links.

3. Go to Wayground; import from Google Drive.

4. Publish

========

In 'Preview' mode, we can see that the links are clickable.

===============================

TAKEAWAY:

- It's OK to start with PPT, which has many functions.

Tried generating a PPT using Copilot in PPT programme: Disappointing

Generating a slidedeck from a WORD outline: NBLM vs Copilot

CO-PILOT:

OBSERVATIONS:

  • Additional ideas added, did not simply follow my outline
  • images more decorative than supportive
  • text's font too small

NBLM did a great job in creating slidedecks: Zhang(2025) and my ENLT6704 s1

Created a slidedeck based on Zhang 2025 using NBLM's new Slidedeck function: Not bad

I continued to try out the other Beta function: Creating slidedeck.

I used the same source: Zhang 2025.

After I clicked 'Create slidedeck', I was given 2 options (a) a more detailed option, and (b) a presentation option.

I chose the latter one.

OUTPUT: Zhang 2025 PPT.pdf

1. Much better than the other AI slidedeck apps. The text on the slides is more consise. The illustrations are much more relevant, not for decoration.

2. The page design is there (based on the template you chose earler).

3. Some slides are a little bit texty.

4. The slidedeck can be presented in full screen, inside NBLM.

5. If downloaded, it comes a PDF file.

CONCLUSION

The output is useful for a short presentation.

One reason I seldom use AI to generate presentation slidedecks

I use AI for a variety of purposed, but today, I still can't bring myself to use AI for generating a presentation slidedeck. One reason is that the visuals that accompany the text on each slide are often irrelevant.

Just now, I tried out Prezi's new AI function. I uploaded my recent OUP presentation PPT to convert it to a Prezi-style presentation. Again, the visuals generated are mostly irrelevant, as in the following example. I did mention teaching students question stems to use when they interact with a chatbot for the purpose of clarifying a grammar/vocab issue. And Prezi did include my examples, and added another point. But look at the accompanying image: What has it got to do with question stems?

AI-generating a presentation from a WORD outline: Unsatisfactory

A moment ago, I created a WORD document in Outline mode, which I had PPT convert to a presentation.

Then I thought: 'Since I have an outline document already, can I use an AI app to turn it into a slidedeck.'

I first tried https://app.presentations.ai/

It did allow me to upload my outline document. There was the option of keeping mostly to my outline content (vs generating new content).

The Result:

https://app.presentations.ai/view/0X3WGXPqt4

- Text: It retains all of my outline text. But it has still added some additional text which I need to delete.

- Visual design: Yes, it's there, but not always useful

-CONCLUSION: Still not useful.

===========================

Then I tried CANVA.AI

In the prompt box, I pasted in my outline.

RESULT:

- It didn't use my outline text.

- It can only generate from a topic.

CONCLUSION: Canva AI is not useful for generating slidedecks either.
