Proofreading and editing are important skills for ESL learners. For example, under a process approach to teaching Writing, learners are usually asked to proofread and edit their first draft for language correctness.
But to me, these are skills which require training and practice; we can't simply assume that students will be able to perform proofreading and editing effectively just because we ask them to. Can AI help? I went to a chatbot and tried out the following idea. This classroom activity sequence may be employed for general proofreading/editing skills training, or as one part of a process writing cycle.
Below:
Text in black: Preparation by Teacher before class
Text in Red: Tasks to be done by students in class.

(ii) look for the changes that have been made in Version B (by highlighting/underlining the changes in Version B),
(iii) explain some of the changes in Version B to the whole class.
